Darnall Army Community Hospital Geriatrics Rotation

OBJECTIVES

image_darnall soldiersTo provide the Darnall Family Medicine residents with both primary care and consultation experience for patients in ambulatory, community and long-term care settings in order to understand the interaction of natural aging and disease, as well as the techniques of assessment, therapy, and management.

BEFORE YOU START

  • Familiarize yourself with basic geriatric care.
  • Request your FREE copy of Geriatrics at your Fingertips from an attending.
  • Review the geriatric assessment instruments available under Assessment Tools & Readings.
  • Review the articles available under Assessment Tools & Readings for your use during the rotation.
  • Review the Nix Clinic and Sevocity EMR orientations, listed in the left-hand tool bar on this page.

**ABSENCES: Please let the staff know of any absences so that we know when to expect you in clinic. If you plan to miss more than 4 clinic days in a rotation, we need you to plan to cover a weekend of call in exchange for that.

GETTING STARTED

On the first day of the rotation, please report to the Nix Senior Health Care Center at 8:15am for a brief orientation.

If you have any questions during your stay, please contact either Tish Rodriguez at 358-3200 or Janie Trevino at 358-3934. Also, note that we all us laboratory coats when doing direct patient care, so please plan accordingly.

Hotels in the Area

The St. Anthony Hotel is in the heart of San Antonio is convenient to the Geriatrics Clinic and to Fort Sam Houstion. For further information, click here to visit their website. The NIX Senior Health Care Center is two blocks south of the St. Anthony Hotel at 414 Navarro, Suite 1111.

 

NIX SENIOR HEALTH CENTER INFORMATION

You will spend most of your time at the Nix Senior Health Center. It is located in Ste. 1111 of the Nix Healthcare Center, 414 Navarro, San Antonio, TX. Again, please review the clinic orientation listed in the left-hand tool bar on this page. The orientation walks you through how to use the ACIS electronic medical record system. Take advantaimage_ parkingge to learn how to apply and interpret the different instruments (MMSE, CLOX, IADL, etc) available on the Assessment Tools and Readings page. There might be opportunities to infiltrate some joints and do some other small procedures.

 

Parking
Please park at Mid-City Garage across the street from the Nix. Have your parking ticket validated at the Nix garage on the first floor. Let them know that you a physician working with the Nix geriatrics group.

Long Term Care Information

You will be assigned to various long term care facilities during your rotation. You will be assigned to go to one of the long term care facilities at least three times (3x) a week. You will be responsible for working with the attending there. You will have day call while at the LTC facilities. All residents will have an opportunity to take call on afternoons when they are assigned to be at a LTC facility with an attending.  We have designed this system so that the calls that come in can be used as a learning tool. 


Please refer to the protocols provided in your Geriatrics Rotation Guide.  If you have questions the protocols do not cover, the supervising attending will be happy to answer any questions you may have. 

 

When you are assigned to any facility other than the Nix Clinic, page the attending ahead of time to confirm where and when to meet. Pager numbers are listed on the back of the Geriatrics Rotation Guide that you receive the first day. You can also call Tisha Rodriguez at 210-358-3200 for pager numbers.
