Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Curriculum
The following is a sample list of the activities which occur during the 2-year fellowship.
Year 1
Ambulatory Care Settings
- Geriatrics / Gait Rehabilitation Clinic (weekly)
An ambulatory setting in which geriatric outpatients undergo comprehensive assessment by an interdisciplinary team including, but no limited to, social work, geropsychiatry and psychiatry. - Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic (weekly)
- Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic (4 days/week for 1 month)
- Gynecology Clinic (weekly for 2 months)
- Adult Day Health Care (3 days/week for 2 months)
Home Care Settings
- Home-based Primary Care (1 day every 1-2 weeks)
This VA home care program manages care for patients who are homebound and who have serious debilitating illnesses. In contrast to Medicare home care, HBPC provides more continuity care management and fewer skilled nursing visits. All of the patients medical needs are provided or coordinated by the HBPC team. - Hospice (4 days/week for 1 month.)
Nursing Home Care Settings
- Extended Care Therapy Center (Daily for 2 months, then weekly for remainder of year)
A rehabilitation oriented nursing home setting in which geriatric outpatients undergo comprehensive assessment by an interdisciplinary team. This is the fellowship's academic nursing home.
Acute Inpatient Setting
- Inpatient Rehabilitation Rotation (4 half days/week for 2 months)
- Geriatric Inpatient Consultations (2 hours/week for 7 months)
Year 2
Ambulatory Care Settings
- Geriatrics / Gait Rehabilitation Clinic (weekly).
- Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic (weekly)
- Private Practice Preceptorship (3 half days/week for 2 months)
Home Care Settings
- Home-based Primary Care (1 day every 1-2 weeks)
Nursing Home Care Settings
- Extended Care Therapy Center [Academic Nursing Home] (weekly)
Acute Inpatient Setting
- Geriatric Inpatient Consultations (2 hours/week for 2-6 months)
- Ethics Consult Service (3 half days/week for 1 month)
- Acute Geriatric Care (daily x 1 month)
Research Activities
- In addition to the above, research activities leading towards a presentation at the America Geriatrics Society is required.
